CRETE – The McCook Community College baseball team lost its second game in as many days with a 13-6 loss Thursday to Doane University JV.

The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning, MCC closed to within 6-5 in the fifth inning but Doane added seven runs in the sixth and seventh inning.

"This is back-to-back days where we just didn't play good, again just too many free passes," said MCC Coach Jon Olsen. "We didn't defend near as good as we should have -- not only in the 'E' column -- but in plays that didn't go down as errors but plays that should have been made."

MCC only had two errors in the error column, but they led to seven unearned runs. Indian pitchers issued nine walks and hit four Tigers.

"We just didn't play well, very few good swings, we just didn't put any facet of the game together," said Olsen. "It was just a frustrating day."

MCC goes to 20-19 overall.

This weekend MCC hosts Luna Community College in a four-game Region IX series at the Jaycees Sports Complex. Doubleheaders are set for 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

"We have a big weekend series coming up in region and need to play well," said Olsen.

MCC is tied for second in the Region IX standings at 12-4. Southeast Community College tops the standings with a 14-2 mark. Western Nebraska is tied with MCC in second at 12-4, with Otero 9-7. Luna is 1-15 and in eighth place in the standings and 2-36 overall.

On Thursday, MCC sophomore Will Edwards (Sydney, Australia) put MCC up 2-0 in the first inning with a two-out, two-run triple.

Doane scored five runs in the bottom of the inning off MCC starter A.J. Matta (freshman, Arvada, Colo.) He went two innings allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks.

Sophomore Jackson Finder (Lincoln Pius) pitched two innings in relief and allowed one unearned run on two hits, two walks and a strikeout.

Edwards led off the MCC fourth with a single. With one out sophomore Blake Dale (Riverton, Wyo.) doubled and freshman Wrigley Strong (Omaha) singled in Edwards. Freshman Lachlan Jones (Newcastle, Australia) drove in a run on a fielder's choice to make it a 5-4 game.

Doane scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to go up 6-4 but in the fifth, the Indians got a run on a Cory Wouters single (freshman, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and a three-base error as MCC cut the gap to 6-5.

"We made a couple big baserunning errors when it was a 6-5 game and that limited any chance to have a big inning," said Olsen.

Caden Karabensh (Johnstown, Colo.) pitched a scoreless fifth but the Tigers got to reliever Jake Quinlivan (sophomore, Sydney, Australia) with three runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh.

MCC got a run in the eighth on a two-base Doane error and two wild pitches.

Freshman Leif Friedrich (Surrey, British Columbia) pitched the final two innings, allowing one unearned run with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Indians had 10 hits on the afternoon with two each by sophomore Luke Bies (Omaha Gross), Edwards and Wouters.
